SCS is setting the new Standard for radio data communication.

Our brand new HF-modem P4dragon DR-7800 is the no compromise further development of the legendary PTC-II, which was designed for yachtsmen use and for the ambitioned amateur radio enthusiast.

The DR-7800 has been optimized for use with the new high-end data transmission mode PACTOR-4. This offers unexcelled fast and robust data links via shortwave; E-mail almost like at home – from any point on earth. The DR-7800 is software compatible to the PTC-II series so that existing PACTOR software (AirMail, RMS Express, Alpha etc) can continue to be used. The elegant design, and the excellently readable and informative OLED display, as well as the easy upgrade possibilities (free updates!) round up the concept of the most modern short-wave modem from SCS, the creators of PACTOR.

Email via SSB is still the most cost-effective way of receiving and sending email while onboard your yacht as there are no connection or line charges, nor are there any charges for the amount of data sent. Payment is by an annual subscription fee.

To use SSB Email you require a service provider and at Yachtfunk.com we recommend SailMail which is used by many yachtsmen around the world and has global support.

SailMail provides a global network of 20 SSB stations, it does not matter which station you use. You can also use SailMail if your computer is connected to the Internet via satellite, mobile or wifi connections – It’s not just a n SSB system.

SCS Pactor 3 and the new Pactor 4 Modem

PACTOR 3 and 4 is the protocol used to send and receive SSB email. Pactor 3 and 4 is specifically designed for use over SSB radio, which due to its nature has a very limited bandwidth. Pactor 3 makes best use of this bandwidth offering a maximum speed 3600 bps and Pactor 4 offering a maximum speed 5200 bps

SSB Equipment Required

To send or receive SSB email you require a suitable marine SSB transceiver, (ICOM M801 or IC-78) a PACTOR 3 or 4 radio modem and a PC computer running MS Windows XP or above. Also with a Mac under Parallels and boot camp !

Icom IC-M801 MF/HF Marine SSB Transceiver (Class E)

The new Icom IC-M801 is based on the NMEA award winning transceiver, and will be available in two versions. The IC-M801E with Class E DSC operation will be available for non-SOLAS vessels.

Sailmail operates on a mixture of private and marine frequencies so do make sure that your marine SSB transceiver has been modified to cover the frequencies operated by Sailmail. The European version of the ICOM M801 will need to be modified. For the M801 this is a simple software change, at Yachtfunk.com we have the software and tools and can do this for you.

SCS PTC-II USB

The P4dragon modem can be used for HF SSB email with SailMail or Winlink and for receiving weatherfax broadcasts.

The P4dragon supports all pactor modems from PACTOR-1 through to PACTOR-4.
PACTOR-4 offers data speeds over twice the speed of PACTOR 3.

Why with Bluetooth ?

The data stream signal of a USB interface is located in the middle of the shortwave bands. Therefore, the USB data signal cannot be separated from the shortwave signal being transmitted or received by simply filtering.

Mutual interference is possible, especially where the antenna is located close to the modem/PC setup (ship borne installations). Mutual interference in this case means that the transmitted HF-signal can disturb the USB data stream between PC and modem, as well the USB data stream can disturb the radio reception of shortwaves.

Our SSB- transceiver IC-78/mail are equipped with an integrated SCS-Pactor III modem and is completely remote controlled via a bluetooth interface.
